Detroit Country Day's boys basketball team might win its seventh state title this season but it won't go undefeated.
Bloomington (Ind.) South outscored Country Day 24-13 in the fourth quarter and defeated The Detroit News' No. 1 team in the state, 73-67, on Saturday before a crowd of 4,500 at South High School.
Ray McCallum Jr. and Amir Williams each scored 17 points for Country Day (18-1) and Jordan Dumars had 14. Donnavan Kirk, with his playing time limited by foul trouble, had just five points for Country Day and DaShonte Riley had 12 rebounds. Williams had 14 rebounds.
Jordan Hulls, who signed with Indiana, led South (18-0) with 23 points.
Country Day entered the game ranked No. 4 by USA Today; South was No. 5.
"It was a great atmosphere,"
Country Day coach Kurt Keener said. "We got everything we wanted on this trip but a W."
It was a close game throughout. No team led by more than seven through three quarters.
"They got three straight turnovers in that fourth quarter and just that quickly scored three straight baskets,"
Keener said. "I called a timeout but it seemed that once they got that momentum we couldn't get it back."
Dumars' 3-pointer with 12 seconds left cut South's lead to 70-67. After a South free throw, Country Day committed another turnover to end its chances.
