PREP BASKETBALL RESULTS
After a pair of emotional contests against arch-rival Rochester and highly-regarded Clarkston, Rochester Adams’ boys basketball team needed to refocus Friday night against a struggling Birmingham Groves team hungry for a win.
It took some time and a little second-half determination, but the Highlanders managed to get the job done as they turned away the pesky Falcons, 54-47, in OAA Division II play in Rochester.
“We just didn’t have the excitement tonight,’’ admitted Adams head coach John Hall. “We had plenty of opportunities on offense, but we just didn’t execute like we had and Groves fought hard. Everything was a battle for us tonight.’’
The Highlanders, however, did manage to dig deep enough in the second half to come away with their fourth league win in six tries. Senior Tyler Newsom bagged seven of his team-leading 17 points in the third quarter and teammates Matt Niemiec and JD Osborne were key contributors in the fourth period as Adams outscored Groves 27-23.
“Tyler did a great job in the third, and everybody kind of had a hand in it in the fourth quarter,’’ Hall said. “We needed it because it was close the whole way.’’
Niemiec followed Newsom in the scoring column for Adams with 11 points. Osborne chipped in nine points and hauled down 10 rebounds. Newsom collected nine rebounds.
For Groves, which dropped to 0-6 in league play and 1-12 overall, Jon Aylward led the way with 17 points. Steve Rimmer chipped in with seven points and a host of blocks.
Adams, 8-5 overall, will be idle until Friday when Troy Athens comes calling.
Groves will entertain Athens on Tuesday.
