Second Semester Eligibility
What a difference a semester can make. Look at Detroit Douglas for starters. Douglas didn't win a game in the first semester and has won four since as four players became eligible, and all are contributing. There are many, many more cases of this.
DaShonte Riley, a 6-11 sophomore, has made an immediate impact on Country Day's depth chart. DaShonte Riley allows his teammates to be more aggressive on their perimeter defensive pressure because he can make up for mistakes made by blocking or altering shots.
A player I was quite impressed with, and had little idea he would, and is, this good is Kawuan Covile of Detroit Community. At 6-4 and 220 pounds, Covile, the brother of Ryvon (Detroit Mercy), is a tremendous athlete who is still learning how to play varsity basketball. He picked up three fouls in the first half against Country Day on Friday and hurt his team by being on the bench. But he'll learn. Some school - D1 or D2 - is sure to get a steal if they land this Covile. Look for Douglas and Community to win Class C district titles, so if you havent seen these teams yet there should be plenty of time left. Detroit Henry Ford has also been bolstered by recent additions and the Trojans could make some noise in the district tournament. This could be Ford's best team since Maurice Taylor played there.
