Wednesday's best bet regional semifinals
Class A
Pontiac Northern vs. Romeo, 8 p.m. @ Troy
The last time Romeo went this far in the tournament, its most famous alumnus, Kid Rock, was still a student. The Bulldogs are more athletic and tougher than the average Macomb County team. Still, give Northern the advantage here, as Tim Williams, Martell Webb, Devonte' Pryor and Bryan Smothers are all three-year vets.
Class B
Hillsdale vs. Battle Creek Harper Creek, 7 p.m. @ Vicksburg
Hillsdale, 19-3, beat Harper Creek, 18-5, 75-66 during the regular season. Both teams have players that present toiugh match-ups -- Hillsdale's Tyler Laser, a score-at-will guard, and the Beavers' Rocky Weaver, at 6-6 able to bang or step out and shoot deep.
Detroit Renaissance vs. Birmingham Country Day, 7 p.m. @ Warren Woods Tower
Country Day faded hard down the stretch, and is now 17-6, but has too much talent to be ever be counted out. The 'Jackets' latest prodigy, 6-11 soph DaShonte Riley, is really coming into his own on the defensive end. But the Phoenix, 19-3, probably have enough grinders up front, with seniors Toreau Brown and Ryan Webb, 6-5 and 6-6 respecitvely, and much-improved 6-7 junior Ian Larkins, to make it an even deal in the pits.
East Grand Rapids vs. Muskegon Heights, 7 p.m. @ Coopersville
EGR beat the Heights in last year's regional, in overtime. East is basically the same team, buit on the star power of the Gradys and 6-9 Justin Anyijong. The Tigers, 21-2, are a different team, smaller and deeper, with four players averaging double figures, but none over 12.
Class C
Detroit Community vs. Detroit Douglass, 7 p.m. @ Clawson
Community is 17-7, but has played one of the toughest schedules for a Class C school. The Class D player of the year, Durrell Summers, is making his post-season move, leading Redford Covenant to a win over Lansing Christian on Tuesday. Now it's time for the Class C player of the year, Chase Simon, to do the same, and make up for past tournament shortcomings. But Douglass won't be an easy out, with that PSL toughness, a quality point guard in junior Josh Collins and an improved post presence since 6-6 bruiser Corey Hodge become eligible.
Bath vs. New Lothrop, 7 p.m. @ Lainsburg
New Lothrop's perfect season is in the balance. If Bath (read Kody Kokx) has it together, it's the more talented team. But New Lothrop has the advantage in karma.
Class D
Engadine vs. Cedarville, 7 p.m. @ St. Ignace
Engadine has an all-stater in David Derusha. But Cedarville, the state's highest scoring team, has six different guys that can kill you. A big, physical team like Kingston could give Cedarville trouble down the line. But the Trojans aren't in trouble just yet.
