July recruiting grind
This is a big week for Michigan and every other college program as it's the beginning of summer recruiting and evaluation at NCAA sanctioned events.
As of today, John Beilein and his staff were at or preparing for several stops including Cincinnati, Ohio, somewhere in Indiana and a jaunt out east.
There's two evaluation periods in July, per NCAA rules, so it's definitely going to be a wild month for all coaches across the country.
What makes it even tougher are the changes in camp and event schedules.
Here's a great column from the Lexington (Kentucky) Herald-Leader that addresses that issue.
There's some interesting Kentucky items in it, too.
Locally, there's a major AAU event to be held July 10-15 at various gyms in northern Oakland County.
It's expected to showcase more than 90 teams and several top players from the 2010 class including Jonathon Horford of Grand Ledge (Al Horford's brother), Mohamed Conde of Belleville and Ohio State commitment Jared Sullinger of Columbus.
It's an NCAA sanctioned event and open to the public.
Games will be played at Lake Orion High, a community/education resource center in Lake Orion, Scripps Middle School in Lake Orion, Oakview Middle School in Oakland, Waldon Middle School in Lake Orion and Lutheran Northwest High in Rochester.
More information can be found here..
A game schedule should be up in the coming days.
Someone by the name of Juwan Howard Jr. is supposed to play in this, not sure if he's related to the former Fab Fiver.
A somewhat related, yet disturbing item: A fan of Detroit Country Day's 6-10 center DaShonte Riley (2009 class) has put together a Web site bearing his name.
I wonder when middle schoolers are going to start getting publicists, if they haven't already.
I remember fans creating sites for other prep standouts in the past, like Marcus Taylor of Lansing Waverly (my alma mater) and Robert Whaley of Benton Harbor.
Fans thought that if they got domain names set up on the site in the player's name then they could roll in the dough once the player made it to the pros.
I wonder what this person's motivation is...
Go to marcustaylor.com now and it appears to be some kind of random thoughts type of blog.
And despite a brief stint in the NBA, it appears that robertwhaley.com is back on the market.
