RECRUITING: Interest in Hendrickson has spiked
The U. got a chance to roll over to the west side of the state last weekend for the state volleyball finals, and we are happy to report that we caught a glimpse of a junior who is generating a little buzz.
Meet Jenison's Megan Hendrickson, who was a main cog in the school's first state title in the sport.
She generated a total of 30 kills as Jenison swept through Fraser and Birmingham Marian without losing one game at Kellogg Arena.
First a quick word about her game. The 6-footer is athletic, and when she whacks a volleyball, it stays whacked.
She is coming off a strong summer season in which her club team won a national title at USA Volleyball's Junior Olympics after winning a state championship.
She has gotten offers from solid programs such as Notre Dame and Duke, but she said she hasn't made any decisions.
"Now that the school season is done, I have a lot of time to start focusing on that, start looking at the pros of some schools and the cons of others," Hendrickson said. "I hope to start making a decision soon."
She started playing as a seventh-grader, when her sister, Whitney, played high school volleyball. Kind of a late start, but she took to the sport.
She has gotten so good that on top of attracting interest from college programs, she also has emerged as a a Miss Volleyball candidate, despite being part of a strong junior class.
"It crosses my mind, of course, but volleyball is really a team sport and it comes down to wins and losses," Hendrickson said. "You have to play together and work together as a team."
And we guess she has passed big sister, right?
"She wouldn't say that, but I would," Hendrickson said with a laugh.
