Country Day's Dumars picks South Florida
Birmingham Detroit Country Day basketball standout Jordan Dumars had two goals when he headed to Orlando in early May.
First, he had to check out the Pistons against the Orlando Magic in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Understandable because his dad, Joe Dumars, is the Pistons' team president.
Second, he paid an unofficial visit to South Florida.
Jordan Dumars liked the place so much, the 6-foot-6 senior wing decided to commit to South Florida on Sunday night.
Country Day coach Kurt Keener said Dumars was also attracted to South Florida coach Stan Heath, a former Michigan State assistant.
"He really liked him and his vision of the program,"
Keener said Monday. "He really liked the setup there and what they have going on."
Dumars' fellow Country Day teammates DaShonte Riley (Georgetown) and Donnavan Kirk (Miami, Fla.) made college commitments earlier this year, and Keener suspected that played a role in Dumars' decision. "All of them decided if we find the right situation, let's go for it,"
Keener said. "Why waste time and draw out the decision-making process?"
Dumars has shown the ability to knock down outside shots, but Keener thinks his best basketball is coming. "Once he gets seriously into weight training, he has a lot of potential at either of the wing spots,"
Keener said.
