Shrine cagers clipped in Classic
Bloomfield Hills Lahser's boys basketball team ended the 2007 portion of its schedule on a high note by squeaking out a thrilling 52-51 victory over Royal Oak Shrine Sunday in play at the Roundball Classic held at Oakland University.
Senior Julian Sykes' layup with 10 seconds remaining gave the Knights a one-point lead, and they held on during the waning seconds to move above .500 at 4-3 heading into the new year.
Sykes ended up with 15 points, one shy of teammate Joshua Lyle's game-high 16-point performance. Lyle also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
Adam Ruhle netted 15 to pace Shrine.
Lahser will return to action Friday at Birmingham Seaholm.
DCD 60, FINNEY 45: A second-half surge that saw Detroit Country Day outscore Detroit Finney 33-20, gave the Yellow Jackets this easy victory in Motor City Roundball Classic play recently at Oakland University.
The Yellow Jackets raced out to an 18-7 lead after one period before the Highlanders rebounded in the second quarter and closed to within two at 27-25 at the break.
But in the final two periods, the Yellow Jackets took control as they outscored the Highlanders 17-10 in the third and 16-10 in the fourth.
DCD (4-2) senior Darnell Brown led three Yellow Jackets in double figures with 14 points. Senior Abe Fadel followed with 12 points, freshman Amir Williams twined 12 and junior DaShonte Riley contributed eight points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked eight shots.
Kavon Rose topped Finney (6-2) with 12 points.
Boys hockey
ST. CLAIR SHORES TOURNAMENT: Rochester Stoney Creek finished a perfect 2-0 at the recent St. Clair Shores Holiday Tournament.
The Cougars toppled Royal Oak 2-0 on Friday to advance to the championship game, then upset St. Clair Shores Unified, 2-1, in overtime to capture the title.
Against Royal Oak, Mike Orosey scored what proved to be the game-winner and Lee Van Slembrouck added an empty-netter to seal the win. Dane Gill had the shutout between the pipes with 17 saves.
Against the hosts, Dylan Beadle scored the game-winner in overtime. Harris Richardson scored the first goal and Nathan Peklo gained the win in goal with 29 saves for the Cougars (4-4-1).
