BOYS BASKETBALL RECAPS: Clarkston wins clash of titans

Clarkston looked like it was going to cruise in a matchup of two of the state's best teams when it took a 21-point lead over Flint Carman-Ainsworth late in the third quarter Friday night.

Then Carman-Ainsworth hit Clarkston with a full-court press and closed the gap to 49-45, and the host Wolves looked shaky. But Clarkston's 6-foot-5 forward Tom Staton grabbed two key rebounds, and guards Brandon Pokley and Julius Porter were clutch at the free-throw line as No. 9 Clarkston held off No. 3 Carman-Ainsworth, 60-51.

Kieon Arkright (16 points) and Jon Lee (15 points) got Carman-Ainsworth (8-1) to within four points with more than four minutes left.

But Staton scored on a put-back and later grabbed a key defensive rebound that led to a fast-break basket. That gave the Wolves (7-0) breathing room, 53-45.

And down the stretch, Porter and Pokley went 9-for-10 at the foul line to seal the win.
