Syracuse huffs, puffs for win over North Carolina State Wolfpack

The 8th-ranked Syracuse Orange clawed its way to a 65-59 victory over North Carolina State in front of 22,334 fans at the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

After leading for the entire first half, Syracuse fell behind by six points midway through the second half.
But the Orange outscored N.C. State 14-3 over the final nine minutes to earn the win. Rick Jackson gave Syracuse a 60-59 lead with a soft hook shot with 6:43 remaining. That would be Syracuse’s last field goal, but the Orange would never trail again.

Syracuse scored its last six points at the free-throw line. The Orange made six out of 10 free-throw attempts in the last six minutes, but that was good enough as Syracuse’s defense stiffened down the stretch.
Syracuse improved to 8-0 on the season, while N.C. State fell to 4-3.

Syracuse led 31-18 early in the game. The Orange let North Carolina State back in the game as Dion Waiters twice lost Scott Wood, State’s top 3-point shooter. Wood made Syracuse pay, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to cut SU’s lead in half. State eventually went on a 10-0 run.
From that point on, Syracuse and North Carolina State were rarely separated by more than four points.
Syracuse led 38-34 at halftime, but North Carolina State scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 42-38 lead.

Scoop Jardine scored a game-high 23 points for Syracuse. Jackson added 16 points.
Wood, a 6-6 sophomore, scored 18 points. All of Wood’s points came on 3-pointers.
